Waikerie enjoys the best of both worlds, being less than 2 hours from Adelaide (175km) and also in the Riverland.  It is the first Riverland town, on the Sturt Highway (Adelaide to Sydney) and has a population of about 5,000.

Being in the Riverland, it boasts vineyard and citrus industries, dry land farming and recreational and tourist facilities.

Like many in-land rural towns, it has a typical desert climate, with clear dry summer heat and low rainfall.  Winter days generally are fine with cold nights.

Waikerie is on the south bank of the River Murray, and also in the Mallee region.  Whilst much of the scrub has been cleared for agriculture, scrublands still remain nearby.  Riverfront and bush-land sections do become available frequently, and offer unique lifestyle opportunities.
